The EMM FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions):
where, when, why...
On Curriculum
Where
does the programme take place?
> From September 1st to the end
of March, you will follow the core courses at EM LYON (France). Then you'll
have a 5 to 6-month internship (everywhere in the world except your own
country).
> On the second year, you will
focus on your specialisation. The location of your studies from mid-September
to the end of March will depend on your specialisation : Aston Business
School for marketing, Ludwig Maximilian Universität in Munich for
organisation, strategy and change and EM LYON for corporate finance.
> From April to August, you will
work on your Master Dissertation: your location will depend on your supervisor.
You may choose to have a supervisor in any of the three institutions,
whatever your specialisation.
What's the role of the first internship?
> Your first internship gives you
the opportunity to validate your choice and your professional project.
It should be directly related to your specialisation. During the first
3 months of your internship, if you feel like you've made the wrong choice,
you have the possibility to change specialisations (after an interview
with your career coach).
> The internship is the best way
to implement what you have learnt during the core courses and to discover
the positions related to your specialisation.
What are the specialisations?
> EMM is a general management programme.
However, we give you the opportunity to specialise in 3 of the main fields
of management that offer the largest choice of job positions worldwide.
- Corporate Finance : this specialisation will be run by EM LYON, focusing
on financial diagnostic, corporate valuation, financial strategy, structured
financing
It will prepare you for investment banking jobs, auditing
firms (Transaction services, Performance Improvement services
),
and financial services within international companies.
- Marketing : this specialisation will be run by Aston Business School
and will develop skills both in consumer goods marketing, services marketing
and B to B marketing.
- Organisation, strategy and change : this specialisation will be run
by Munich School of Management and will give you the conceptual frameworks,
the methodology and the main skills required to join consulting firms
or international companies in internal consulting services.
What do you mean by "master dissertation"?
> As for any master's degree, you
will have to write a master dissertation during the second year of the
programme: it consists of a significant essay dealing with a specific
managerial issue. Although you can choose your subject, it should be related
to your specialisation. You will have to identify a professor in the list
of the 3 schools' Faculty members whom you would like to have as a supervisor
for this work. You will need about four months to carry out this master
dissertation (from April to July or latest September). For this master
dissertation, you will have to work both on a theoretical approach of
your subject (an extensive literature review will be required) and on
its practical application (you may either have to analyse real data or
to run interviews or to observe practices in companies). You will choose
the appropriate methodology with your supervisor.
Will
I have the opportunity to learn French and German?
> During the first year, you can
follow language courses in French, German and Spanish. We suggest that
you choose one language only, as it requires a huge investment that won't
necessarily be compatible with your workload.
On corporate relations
& careers
How
can we approach companies?
> All year long, you will have
many opportunities to meet international companies - including the "Career
Days" (more than 100 companies on the EM LYON campus during 3 days),
the "Learning from Leaders" conferences (CEOs present their
strategies and exchange with students) and the "Career Opportunities"
(presentation of internship and job opportunities by a specific company).
Which career services are available throughout
the 2 years?
> Starting the programme, you are
offered dedicated career services including workshops, career round tables
and a personalised coaching by a professor or the Head of the programme.
Do professionals take part in the learning process?
> Together with Faculty members,
professionals from the schools' partner companies provide courses from
a "hands-on" view and co-build case studies in the main fields
of management.
Do you have partnerships with companies in every
economic sector?
> The main sectors are represented:
consumer goods, luxury brands, investment banking, auditing, consulting,
IT, B2B and B2C services and industries.
Will it be possible to find a job in any of the
3 countries (UK, France, Germany)?
> More than 30% of our Masters
graduates find their first job outside their home country. The internship,
the 3-angle learning pedagogy and the multi-campus life experience have
a strong impact on the location of the first job.
On Degrees
Which
degree will I get by the end of the programme?
> You will get 3 degrees: the MSc
in Management Degree from EM LYON, the advanced MSc in International Business
from Aston Business School and a joint degree from the 3 institutions.
That makes EMM the first triple degree Master ever
How is that possible? What's the difference with
a double degree?
> The whole EMM programme is co-designed
by 3 institutions whereas a double degree (2 institutions involved) is
simply validated by a bilateral agreement (there's no real co-construction).
Co-construction means that, starting in the first year and in every course,
you will have a 3-angle view throughout the programme - regardless of
the country where you're studying.
On Requirements
Is
a management degree required to enter the programme?
> It is not necessary to have a
management degree to enter the programme: you may have an engineering
degree, a law degree... Most of all, you have to learn fast and to be
able to analyse complex situations. You also need to know why you want
to engage in management studies, what your expectations are. You have
to make sure that the world of business attracts you and that you are
willing to get into it. The more diverse the backgrounds of the students,
the richer your learning experience.
Do I need to have a precise professional project
to apply?
> It is not required, but you have
to be sure that you want to work in a managerial environment. Ask yourself
the following questions: "What are my expectations? Are managerial
positions the right way to meet these expectations?". Answer these
questions before going to the EMM interview. During the first semester
of the programme, we will help you define a more precise professional
project.
Do I need to speak all of the 3 languages?
> No, but you need to have a very
good level in English, as it is the teaching language. During the first
year, you will have the opportunity to learn another language: it is important
for your social life and for your internship as well.
Do I need any professional experience to apply?
> No. But you need an excellent
academic background! You will start to build your professional experience
through internships during the programme. However, you will find it an
advantage if you have had students' jobs or internships, as they may have
helped you lay the basis of your professional project.
On Application
How
is the application form used in the selection process?
> Take time in filling the online
form as every word counts! Your motivation, your personal and professional
project, your past experiences are key information for us to decide whether
or not you should enter the programme. We also use this information during
your interview.
Is it compulsory to have official GMAT &
English test scores when applying?
> GMAT and English Test (IELTS,
TOEIC/TOEFL) are compulsory. You will be asked for your scores when applying.
In case you cannot provide your scores then, you may have the possibility
to give them later by providing a proof of your registration.
When should I provide the certified copy of my
previous degrees?
> When applying or latest on the
first day of the programme if you are in the process of graduating when
applying (if not, your admission will be cancelled).
How will the interview be run?
> It will take place in your home
country and it will be conducted by one of our alumni and / or a representative
of the partner institutions. It may last 30 to 45 minutes. It aims to
check that you have the right profile to enter the EMM programme (maturity,
motivation, understanding of issues, commitment
). Questions can
be based on what you have declared in your online application (project,
experiences, previous degrees
).
On Fees
Are
scholarships available?
> Yes: they are granted according
to motivation and excellence and delivered by a dedicated jury. Once you're
admitted in the programme (and not before that), you need to fill an EMM
Scholarship Application (provided on demand): The maximum amount granted
is 5,000 euros per year for non-European citizens and 2,000 euros per
year for European citizens. The number of scholarships available is limited
(see website).
> We recommend that you also check
scholarship opportunities in your home country. We can provide all useful
information regarding these applications.
Will I be able to get a loan in any of the 3
countries (UK, France, Germany)?
> You need to get your loan in
your own country before leaving (the guarantees needed are different from
one country to the other).
Will I get paid during my internship?
> As it is a professional internship,
you will get paid for it. Income may vary according to economic sector
and country.
Will it be possible to run a part-time job during
my studies?
> You may do so within two conditions:
having a work permit and speaking the language of the country you're in.
But keep in mind that the amount of personal work required to get your
degrees is high
Do you offer payment facilities?
> Facilities on the payment of
the tuition fees (which excludes all other costs) can sometimes be arranged
on an individual basis with no extra charge. Requests are made to the
selection officer. In the case of a potential scholarship, a balance will
be arbitrated between the payment facilities and the amount of the schorlarship.
